THINGS TO DO

Adventure-Seeker? Check out activities with a flame  (  [icon name=”fire” class=”red” unprefixed_class=””]) for some extra thrills!!

Lion and Rhino Park   ( [icon name=”fire” class=”red” unprefixed_class=””]) – Play with lion and cheetah cubs and even baby rhinos in the nursery. You can also drive through the reserve and get up close with African wildlife. Approximately 45 min outside the city, this will be an all-day affair. www.rhinolion.co.za

Kruger National Park   ( [icon name=”fire” class=”red” unprefixed_class=””]) – One of the largest and most well-known reserves in Africa and it is only about 5 hours from Johannesburg. If you really want to experience a safari through game drives and walks, and seeing the Big 5 (Lion, Elephant, Buffalo, Leopard, and Rhino) then you definitely should allocate at least 2-3 days and spend some time with Mama Africa. www.krugerpark.org

Pilansberg Game Reserve   ( [icon name=”fire” class=”red” unprefixed_class=””]) – A 2 hour drive from Johannesburg this is a great game reserve that is set in an extinct volcano that has over 7000 animals including the Big Five. You could also stay at the reserve for a few nights at its luxurious overnight accommodations. www.pilanesberg-game-reserve.co.za

Apartheid Museum – Understand the system of racial segregation in South Africa from 1948 to 1994 between Africans and Afrikaans (Dutch). It was created after World War II by the Dutch dominated Nationalist Party and its resistance to these prejudice laws is akin to America’s Civil Rights movement. www.apartheidmuseum.org

Soweto – This is the nicest township (ghetto) you will come across in South Africa. With an extensive history starting with blacks being forcibly removed from the city starting in the early 1900’s, it has been at the forefront for major political changes in the anti-apartheid movement (i.e. Soweto Uprising, Freedom Charter etc).  See the Orlando Towers below.  http://www.soweto.co.za

Vilakazi St – Located in Soweto, it is the only street in the world where two Nobel Peace prize winners have lived (Nelson Mandela and Desmond Tutu). Also, a good place to have lunch. www.southafrica.info/vilakazi.htm

Hector Peterson Museum and Memorial – A major part of the reason why so many people feel that Soweto is unsafe, is due to the Soweto Uprising that started with the murder of Hector Peterson in 1976. This place is a must see and crucial part to understanding the deep history of Johannesburg and Soweto. www.soweto.co.za/p_hector.htm

HISTORY

The Zulus – Ever heard of Shaka Zulu (not Chaka Khan the singer)? Well he was the Zulu chief that formed a powerful state in the southernmost regions of Africa in the early 1800’s conquering many other clans creating an extensive Zulu Empire. One of the most notable events in Zulu history is the defeat of the British on their initial invasion. Imagine less than 20,000 Zulu warriors against 35,000+ British soldiers armed with guns being defeated by spears and shields. However, in the second invasion, the British were able to defeat the Zulus and eventually colonize the area.

Modern History (The Dutch) – Fast forwarding to the mixed colonization of Dutch and British in South Africa after the First and Second Anglo Boer War, we have a climate with a lot of tension between the Boers and the British in the late 1800s.

[bsa_pro_ad_space id=20]

The Boers (Dutch) lost and felt the brunt of the war, so as the British tried to unify these divided South African colonies, the Dutch Nationalist Party arose, whose intent was to champion the Afrikaans interest. This party eventually created the segregation laws and started what we now know as the Apartheid that lasted for almost 50 years.

Modern History (The Apartheid & Soweto Uprising) – The Apartheid government is what led to the township of Soweto being created as blacks were forcibly removed from the city during the gold rush period. In addition, a key piece of Soweto history is when the government, essentially overnight, forced the language in school to go from English to Afrikaan.

[bsa_pro_ad_space id=10]

Approximately 10,000+ high school students protested this change on June 16th, 1976, and at its end was the brutal killings of school children, known as the Soweto Uprising. The most famous of those killed in the event was Hector Peterson. The outrage that was expressed in these senseless killings spread to many other South African communities and caused even more protests, so much so that it gained international attention. This Soweto Uprising helped galvanize the liberation movement and was a major contributing factor to bringing an end to the Apartheid regime.

AFFORDABILITY

Johannesburg is pretty cheap especially considering it is a developed city. I remember going out and getting 2 beers with two glasses of Maker’s Mark (whiskey) on the rocks and it ended up being less than $10. Lunch can be anywhere from $2-$8 USD depending on where you go. You can also go to some higher-end restaurants and still stay under $25 USD in most cases.

[bsa_pro_ad_space id=11]

There is quite a lot of variability in prices when it comes to lodging depending on where you stay. I stayed at an Air BNB in Maboneng for about $40 USD per night but when I stayed at the Protea (Marriott Brand) in Braamfontein it was $125 USD per night. I used points rather than cash but you can see the wide price variability. Lastly, I also got a haircut for less than $2 USD in Johannesburg when it typically costs around $20 USD in the United States. The affordability factor in South Africa is great, which is also why it is one of my favorite places. Check of Big Mac Index below.

RELAXATION

A trip to Johannesburg will be a trip full of history and also likely exploring some of its wildlife at a game reserve or at a safari. There are some relaxing activities to do there but not as much as I would have liked.  Typically, I would show relevant museums in this section.  However, the history that will be covered, will be heavy, so I decided to cover  the Apartheid Museum and the Hector Peterson Museum  under the “Things to do” and “History” section.  Going through these museums will likely make you angry and do the opposite of relax you.

Markets/Shopping – There is a weekly, weekend market in Maboneng and in Braamfontein. Maboneng’s is on Sundays and Braamfontein is on Saturday so make sure to visit at least one while in Johannesburg to get a taste of local cuisine and pick up a few local souvenirs. There are a lot of other ones outer so let us help you out. www.eatout.co.za/food-markets-joburg

Wine Cellar Wine Tasting (Dunkeld) – Another option for you wine lovers out there while in Joberg is to attend one of the wine tasting events at Wine Cellar. They normally take place on Thursday and include both international and local wines with about 10-15 wines per event. Definitely more pricey as they start off normally around R500 but the staff will be very knowledgeable and can provide some personal recommendation on wines to try while in Joberg and also if you plan to go to Cape Town. They have a sister store in Cape Town as well. http://www.winecellar.co.za/

[bsa_pro_ad_space id=12]

Bioscope (Maboneng Precinct) – An independent film house where you can do something a bit eclectic. You can watch local films and documentaries as you enjoy a glass of wine or some unique dishes that pair with that evenings showcase. A venue that supports local industries, that Bioscope is located in a 1970 industrial building and it is one of several venues that include residential units, a rooftop, retail shops, and event spaces that host concerts and festivals. http://www.thebioscope.co.za/

Cube Tasting Kitchen (Parknorth Heights) – If you are a foodie then this is the place to be. There is something for everyone in Johannesburg. You have your posh night clubs, a trendy or grungy bar scene, and a variety of places that play great live music. Also, make sure you look up what is going on during your time in Joberg, as there are usually some special events.

Vaal River Party Boat (Day Drinking Anyone??) – If you are looking for some rest and relaxation, a romantic getaway,  water activities, rock climbing, or my recommendation, a Party Boat, then this 1-1.5 hours trip from Jozi is well worth it. There are a variety of party cruises or boats that can be rented but probably better to have a group of people going with you. WHERE TO STAY

Johannesburg is the largest city in South Africa and is located in the province of Gauteng, which means “place for gold”. You will have quite a few options to for the neighborhoods to stay in but keep in mind that these locations will not be that close to each other.

Braamfontein – The heartbeat of Joberg, and my personal favorite because of the easy accessibility of a variety of restaurants, bars, clubs, local markets, and weekend events etc. There are so me sketchy areas but if you are an experienced traveler, there is nothing to worry about. I stayed at the Protea using points (too expensive for my budget otherwise) and had a blast!!

Sandton – This is the affluent and upscale area of Joberg. This area has the high end malls, the more posh clubs and also has Nelson Mandela square, an area where you can see the Mandela Statute. I stayed at a hotel in the area but decided to move back to Braamfontein after two days because I got a bit bored. Also worth checking out Melrose Arch neighborhood if you are in the area.

[bsa_pro_ad_space id=16]

Maboneng – A transitional township that has converted homes into art galleries, it is becoming one of the most pristine and trendy areas in Joberg. Still growing, the neighborhood is just a few blocks in length and has a small, but expanding restaurant selection. I stayed at an apartment for a week using Air BNB.

Melville – A hippy neighborhood filled with at least 30 different restaurants and bars on one main strip, you can find locals along with foreigners enjoying the positive vibes. There are great options for lodging as Melville is situated in a trendy suburb that is also close the University of Johannesburg and University of Witwatersrand. I didn’t stay in Melville but did experience the nightlife a couple of times. This would absolutely be a great place to stay.

[bsa_pro_ad_space id=16]

Visa – Not Required

Suggested Duration – 2 to 4 days

Airport Transport – From the airport you can take the train or bus but I would suggest taking a taxi unless you have talked to your point of contact at your accommodations and they suggest otherwise. They are moderately priced and will help you get your bearings in the city. From the airport it shouldn’t cost more than 420 rand (around $35 USD but prices vary).

General Transport – I did use local taxis a lot but most people are going to want to go to hire a personal driver/taxi to take you around.

MY EXPERIENCE

Pros – Johannesburg is truly transforming to becoming the gem of South Africa. With new cultural districts, great restaurants, and a very down to earth atmosphere, you are sure to leave with some great memories in South Africa’s largest city. The city was instrumental in ending the Apartheid and has the only street in the world that was home to two Nobel Peace prize winners.

Cons – A lingering reputation of being dangerous over the last couple of decades, Joberg is has gone through quite a rebirth. It is a bustling city with plenty to offer but as with any place be aware of your surroundings as there are still sketchy areas. Also just wish this city was by the beach and had vineyards but you can’t get everything you want.

[bsa_pro_ad_space id=17]

My Experience – When I first came to Johannesburg in 2013, I only stayed for one day before going to Kruger National Park for a safari so I did not give it a fair chance.   To be real, I was shook. I heard stories about Africa and Johannesburg (but if you were to ask me specifics I couldn’t tell you any) so I intentionally limited my time in here.  I let people impose their fears on to me…a big no no.

However, as part of my 7 continent adventure in 2015, I just had to come back, and you couldn’t tell me nothing! I stayed almost 2 weeks in different parts of the city and absolutely loved it!   Johannesburg is a developed city with a constant flow of activities, extensive history, and it is cheap! It also feels more like Africa to me than Capetown because you do not see as much of a Dutch (Afrikaan) influence.

In addition, I did some service projects in Soweto, a huge township just outside the city that contains more than 50% of Johannesburg’s total population.  I worked with kids, helped organizations with funding proposals,  and even reviewed business ideas of young entrepreneurs.  To be honest,  as much as I may have helped them, volunteering with these awesome people did so much more for me.

It really helped re-shape my perspective about Africa and changed the narrative of what the media portrays of a poverty stricken, primitive nation to one of beautiful people who are smart, innovative, and passionate.  I felt like I became my brothers keeper where their struggles became  my struggles and it was no longer “them” but it was “us”.  My trip to Johannesburg was just pure and simple..DOPE!!

Oh, and I haven’t even talked to you about my Soweto crew!!  A buddy of mine connected me with some Soweto locals and they were PHE-NOM-ENAL.  They treated me like family and showed me nothing but love.  Check them out if you end up in Soweto at the below address. You can have a drink and they will take you around town for a truly authentic experience. Just tell them WeWorkToTravel, sent you!!

[bsa_pro_ad_space id=19]

I have so many stories to tell from Jozi that I am going to save them for a few blog post but let’s just say this was one of my favorite cities I visited on my around the world trip if not “the” favorite.

Jodi, Joburg are some of the most popular names for my beloved Johannesburg. Yes beloved because I felt comfortable there. While there we no other wild adventures, outside of the safari, the people where friendly, helpful and confident in their history as Africans. Coordinated by one and only travel expert Nadia Henry with Travel with Sparkle, we had such a great time meeting the locals, eating good food, sightseeing and catching up on the holocaustic behavior of apartheid and its racial turmoil it caused, was eye opening. As a child I remember seeing it play out. While remnants of it exists, Johannesburg’s residents are advocates for change, and that spirit is infectious. As a Jamaican, I was excited to have walked the streets where Nelson Mandela walked, and visited the place he and Winnie called home. Travel with Sparkle curated an exceptional trip. Everything we did was masterfully designed. I am hooked. Nadia a professionalism and attention to details is trustworthy. To date, I have traveled with TWS twice, and I am looking forward to what 2024 will bring.

Rustenburg, South Africa. I visited this area twice and spent 6 months there on my second trip teaching at a boarding school. I fell in love with the people and still keep in touch with some of the students. Sun City, Pilanesburg National Park safari, Lion Park were all great experiences. The best part though was hearing baboons playing on top of the roof of the house and seeing elephants on the side of the road like we see deer here in Florida. From the house we could hear the lions roar at night. It’s like the best of both worlds because you could be out in the middle of nature and just a short drive away you could be at a sprawling mall.

I had the time of my life in Johannesburg, it was amazing to see all of the historical sites such as Nelson Mandela’s home and museum, the apartheid museum, Hector Pieterson museum and Vilakazi street to name a few. The culture is rich and welcoming, especially at weekend markets. The food was delicious and the people were kind and inviting. I would recommend a visit to Jo’Burg to all of my friends and family and I can’t wait to go back! The costs of staying here were low, however I did save a ton on accommodation costs by staying with family friends.

My trip to South Africa was by fair my favorite, in particular Johannesburg! We stayed at Hilton Sandton which is very convenient to Nelson Mandela Square. There are tons of restaurants and shops in Nelson Mandela Square. If you go please visit Trumps (which absolutely has no affiliation to Donald Trump because we asked) they have the best steaks and are very affordable. If you’re interested in a safari that is not as expensive as Kruger National Park but still allows you to see the big 6 then visit Pilanesburg National Park. We booked our safari which offered free pickup from our hotel. Visiting Soweto is an absolute must! There is so much history and culture there! Also if you’re an adrenaline junkie like I am then go bungee jumping from the Orlando Towers. One of the scariest, most exhilarating experiences ever. I just loved Johannesburg because I felt at home. The people were so warm and welcoming. Definitely will be returning!!!

So guys let me share with you my horrible experience in South Africa. First of all I have to precise my wife and I are Mixed (it will be important in my story).

It was my first trip in Africa and I had a lot of expectations about it. We landed in Joburg airport after a 10 hours flight from France and we could feel straight away the strange atmosphere here.
Let me explain, where we are living in France we don’t have issues about black skins, brown skins, white skins, red skins or whatever (sure sometimes you will find stupid people who make you feel incorfortable with a strange attitude because you don’t have the “right” color but it’s very uncommon)
Here in South Africa it was for us like a punch in the face, we were waiting in the custom line and we saw in the line for SA residents the difference between black and white people. Black and white are not talking together, faces are close, not smiling, not even look each other, You can see white people hurry or pushing other people (mainly black people) to go faster …….

After this we have quickly realized that apartheid is still running the country. We had to pick up our car from the rental car agency and one more time it was unpleasant for us. My wife was seated waiting for me in the corner and almost all the ladies (black) were looking her like an animal (you know what I mean or maybe you have already lived that when your mamma look at you from the toes to the head with strong black eyes when you did something wrong and maybe teeth kissing after). For me it was different but still unpleasant, a white guy in front of me (south africain) have been welcome like a king with a big smile and a “Hello Sir how can help you” from the guy from the rental agency (black).
The man from the agency was very polite and helpfull with him but when it was my turn it was very but very different. Not a “hello Sir” for me but a simple “hey” and still with this attitude of looking at you with big eyes, the guy was very directive and unpleasant with me.

At the beginning we tried to understand the big diference of attitude between white and black people and tried to apologize bad behaviour from black people with us but I had the chance to talk with black people from Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Malawi, Ivory Coast and Senegal who told me that even with black foreigners black South Africains are not respectfull.

We were dispointed about this attitude because we thought to find there a strong black solidarity (related to the horror of apartheid) but not.
This attitude was more obvious for us because we are mixed :
    – so not white (White people tends to feel superior of black and it will be harder to have a nice talk with a white guy)
    – and not black (so black people don’t really accepted you as a “Black” and keep it you in the “not like you” case)

I want to precise that in all the cities we traveled (Joburg, Graskop, Port Elizabeth, Knysna, Hermanus and Cape Town) we felt different vibes more or less friendly. I don’t want to affray people here but before to go there I think you have to be prepared for this and keep it mind that (I think we werent’ enough ready for that).
Be ready to see in a restaurant black people more in one side and white people in the other side, see black waiters or waitresses say : “yes boss” to a white client and after that threat you bad as client because you are black or mixed, in a restaurant maybe see waiters take the order of white people before you, talk nicely to white people and not with you, etc)

If like me you are concerned about black history or the representation of black people in the world I think you will be a little bit ashame and disapointed about black people in South Africa.

    Traveling While Black

I arrived in South Africa after a 10hour flight from Germany. The good news is it was a red eye with only a 1 hour time change. I met a flight attendant from my previous Morocco flight. He was so cool! Heyyyy!
My friend Sheri met me for our adventure to begin! So good seeing people after time apart. We ubered to connect with Eric at his fancy house with a pool! I need to get an assignment somewhere like here. Smh. When in Africa get with it, I headed to a braid shop to get my hair braided. It took 2 women 2 hours and 15 mins to get me right. I looked up at some point and had 3-4 people finishing up my braids. They did a great job and for about 55 US dollars! Yessss! ‍♀️‍♀️

Once we finished we went to house so I could get settled in and change. Next we headed to a little restaurant around the corner for okra stew with goat! And for anyone who really knows me knows I love okra! This was right up my country alley. There was a bread like substance included as well inside. See pics. Not sure if I’m a fan but I can see the need to eat it for fullness.

Later that evening we headed to a hookah lounge called Byblos! Shoutout to the locals for showing so much love. We had a ball. Dancing to American music and African beats. The weather was perfect for this outside venue. We partied and danced like we were young. Feeling old the next day! Hahahha

    Saturday
Sheri’s husband derrick came home from travel. So I visited with him for a bit and he made me and the girls breakfast. So sweet. Then Sheri and I headed out for adult adventures. We drove to this large mall/casino complex. Being a kid at heart I immediately went into an arcade and played some games. We had a good time. We then went into the casino where we played about 20 bucks worth and lost. Oh well. Fun while it lasted. We choose a wing spot for lunch that was pretty good. I learned quickly that the power regularly goes out in South Africa. The locals including Sheri were so unbothered.

After spending some time with the family we headed to a lounge called signatures. At first we thought this is too fancy with their live band and such but turned out to be a really cool place. We met some British guys who were foolish and a local South African chick who lived in America for quite some time but she’s back home now. We enjoyed our time here. Next stop Byblos again! Hahahah and it was like we were super stars! The locals who looked out for us the night before came running. One security guy really loves Sheri and of course she tells him she’s married and he’s like whatever me too! Hahhha foolery at its best. I love the locals in Africa really dance. Men and women alike. We danced and partied as usual and then headed home before the trouble came out.

Sunday we planned to bbq and hang out with the family. But first Sheri and I headed to the markets. You can buy any and everything here. I looked for some headwraps, spices, clothing and little trinkets to bring home. And I found them all. The locals were a bit aggressive but I shut that down immediately so we could browse in peace. We found everything we were looking for and more. Then there is another market in the parking area. Awesome as well. We headed to the food court area for this Malaysian fried fish! Drooooll! It was sooo good! And spicy! Yesss!

We headed back to the house to chill and relax with the fam. I sat in the hammock to get some sun on me. Derrick showed out as always and the food was bomb.

Monday Derrick had to take the day off to kick it with us. lol! I think he felt he was missing out on some of the fun. We went to the pet store so he could get more fish and fancy up his tank. He had recently lost several fish so he wanted to get it back going again. They had a huge python and some spiders that apparently people collect! Crazy! My skin is crawling as I write this. We then went into the urban areas of joburg for lunch. The restaurant is called Rosa Hut. Once again we had this fried fish! Life! So delicious. We also had fried okra! Yes lord! So good. I wanted to pass out as soon as we left and we did. Lol! Just napping in the car. It was perfect.

Sheri and I went to the mall to get manis and pedis. I got to get my pic in Mandela square but man once again the locals all trying to be up in the pic with ya girl. See my face. Mess!

On Tuesday we got up early to go take the big bus tour. I often recommend these as a quick way to see a city when running short on time. Purchase the tickets online for a discount. We also added Soweto to the tour. It made me want to go back and watch Sarafina again. Also Trevor Noah is from that area. I had no idea. The tour was great. Lots of history and good sites. But the Soweto portion was by far my favorite. We actually got off our tour and stayed an hour or so just to see the Mandela house, do some shopping and peek at Tutus residence which is still occupied by his family today. Amazing. And very humbling. We had lunch in the college part of town. Very good meal and drinks.

We headed back to meet Emilee on her way home from school. Derrick took Sheri and I to dinner at this place called Chriscos. We had this amazing seafood platter and roasted chicken dish! So good!

Wednesday! The most amazing day ever. We got up early and headed out for a safari! We tried to feed a giraffe first but she was not around for feeding. The gentlemen working the cub area offered to take us to see them the ‘African Way’. Which basically meant taking us in the back gate. I love my people! Hahahaha. We entered and immediately got to pet the baby cubs. They were so cute. One definitely jumped on Sheri and bit at her shirt! Lol. We couldn’t make this up if we tried. We did the self drive option thru the reserve so that we could go at our own pace. It was wonderful. We had lunch and relaxed in one of their restaurants. Good as well. The chicken wings were legit! We headed back to the house to relax a bit before I had to head out.

South Africa was amazing and I will be going back very soon. My direct flight cost me 700 USD. As for cash I think I had about 200 usd worth of Rand and I didn’t have to go to the atm again until the end of my trip. Very affordable place. Even if I had to stay at a hotel the cost was not ridiculous either.
Life and love things. I don’t always post about this part but I feel it’s important to share. Amazing what the universe will bring you when you aren’t looking. If you’re sending out positive vibes they will come back to you. And positive people. I’m very blessed and this trip served as a good reminder. I’m grateful and my life is amazing. Wishing you all the peace, love and happiness. Create a little magic every day ☺️
Happy to answer any questions about the trip.

Johannesburg has so many things to explore. I feel like its the most underrated city in South Africa because people only want to do to Cape Town and be the beach.

Johannesburg has unique places to explore as well like besides the usual but one can explore Hartbeespoort Dam area.

Hartbeespoort is a South African resort town north of Johannesburg. It’s known for the Hartbeespoort Dam and the whitewater rapids of the Crocodile River. Both are visible from the Hartbeespoort Aerial Cableway, which ascends to the top of the Magaliesberg mountains. Outside of town, Miracle Waters is a spring-water dive site in a former chrome mine. Also nearby is the Ann van Dyk Cheetah Centre, a big-cat sanctuary.

Things to do in Harties :
    1. The Upside Down House
    2. French Toast Cafe ( which has its own mini Eiffel Tower)
    3. Prettville (which is an old film set based on the 50’s which is now a tourist attraction for awesome photo ops)
    4. Hartebeesport Cable – to enjoy a full view of the area and the dam. There are restaurants at the top.

Other things to do in Johannesburg which are mandatory for the South African history is :

    1. Visiting Vilakazi – this where Nelson Mandela home is and one can have a tour inside.
    2. Restaurants to have traditional South African Food/Local Food experience.
3.Orlando Towers – one can enjoy the views of Soweto and bungee or free fall or just enjoy the view. There is also paint ball or a quad biking tour around the neighbourhood.
    4. Maboneng on the weekends in the CBD of Johannesburg where there are food markets.

Johannesburg has so many things to do and see and is enriched in a lot of history. The night life is also very fun , there are Hip Hop clubs and everything just need to make sure you are vigilant and safe :)

If anyone needs a driver in Johannesburg I would recommend :

    Senate : +27 81 075 2293

The Hilton Sandton Johannesburg was a great hotel and location. Shuttle to the mall, plenty of accessible excursions and very clean. The rooms were around $300.00 per night at the time of my travel. The service and atmosphere was exceptional as well.

One thing tou need to do :
Go Visite tSOWETO AND THE NELSON MANDELA HOUSE AND HISTORY.

Don’t go out during the night. Really dangerous for tourists (because local people can recognize Tourists and you will be an easy prey)

With the economic crisis too lot of black people from others African contry had problems in Joburg. So you really need to be careful.

Hey y’all, I highly recommend to stay at the Hyatt regency hotel in Rosebank, the location is safer than else where in Joburg and the hotel is amazing. There’s a mall right next to the hotel with food courts and nice little shops. Also you’ll find a great restaurant literally right next to the hotel called “The Grillhouse” I recommend steak and red wine! There’s also a bar/ club next to the restaurant called “Katzys” great drinks and good entertainment (live bands).

I highly recommend purchasing the two day Hop On Hop Off bus for job-burg. Make sure you select the option that includes the Soweto tour. This bus will take you to all the main things to see/do in Jo-burg. It is called 2 Day Bus and Soweto Combo and it costs $40usd. I similar tour is also available in one day, but it’s a bit tight to fit all the stops and the Soweto Tour in one day. If you only have one day, make sure you catch the very first bus of the day so you don’t miss out on any stops you’re interested in. It’s not mandatory to stop at each place. A map is provided and each stop is announced so you can get off only where interests you.

Some of the main stops are:
    1) Apartheid Museum
    2) Gold Reef City
    3) Johannesburg Zoo
    4) Constitution Hill
    5) Roof of Africa

The Soweto tour includes (2 hour guided tour ) :
    1) Hector Pieterson Museum
    2) Soweto Towers – you can also bungee and base jump here after taking your town pictures
    3) Vilakazi Street & Nelson Mandela House
    4) 2O10 FIFA Staduim – FNB Stadium

Amongst the many things you can do in Johannesburg, you have to visit the Lion and Safari Park, which is about 45 minutes drive from the city or from the Sandton area. It’s affordable, you get an amazing safari experience with a tour guide (you have an option to do it by yourself), and you get to touch, play with, and take pictures with the adorable cubs! ?

We stayed in SunCity, I loved the hotels and the environment surrounding it was so much fun people were hella friendly. We stayed at the SunCity cabanas and enjoyed it pool side and the night life was so much fun, they had shuttle at hottle that you could book to pick and drop you off. (just book in advance). There are couple of things to do we tried the Zip 2000, valley of waves and predator world (was not a fan off animals in cages so that was not my favorite) all in all it was a fun trip.

So Johannesburg gave you a true city feeling of the regular hustle and bustle life. From the arrival into Tambo International, you were greeted with cab drivers trying to get that fare but Uber is available. If you want an Uber XL be prepared to be snugged because their XL is not the regular Yukon or Escalade you may like but more like a Honda CRV, you will do better ordering a van if you want the extra legroom and luggage space. I stayed in an area called Sandton which is on the plush side was still affordable but it was very convenient to the nightlife scene. Nightlife ends early like 2am so get out early and there are DUI spot checks by the local police so be careful (do uber or a cab). The Melville section of town offered some nice local eateries and bar but not a lot in local cuisines. To get to the good local cuisines you would need to be off the grid but don’t do it alone as with any city some of the shadiest characters hang out in the area. When all fails there are 24 hrs McDonalds and KFC’s available and it tastes different (in a good way) so be prepared. You will get a mixture of different ethnic groups there including Syrians, Lebanese, Indians and Asians. City life flow but don’t worry you won’t have to dig deep in your pockets to have a good stay.

Johannesburg is a beautiful country, I’ve been quite a few times now and I never spend a lot of money on food, the food in this country is honestly so delicious and so cheap, and the people are so kind! The monte casino is a place to visit for a fun day out, it has everything from a cinema, bars, steak houses, fast food places, bowling, I could go on, I think one of the top things along with seeing the apartheid museum is doing a safari, there’s leopard song safari and glen afric, they’re both good just keep in mind what time you want to go as if you go too early before it gets too hot you might not see a lot of animals and if you go later in the day it can be scorching hot. Johannesburg is a really nice place to visit and for such a beautiful country you really will get your money’s worth and more!

Johannesburg is one of the most developed and diverse cities in Africa It really has a cosmopolitain feel to it, rich in culture, the people in the city are fairly friendly if you are willing to meeting mingle with the locals. South Africa has a strong history. There are many things to experience. You could definitely experience all of Johannesburg in a few days. For those who love to immerse themselves in the realness of it all The best things to do would be to experience Soweto for sure, Try the local food , local markets, see historical sights like the Mandela house on Vilakazi street, Moja cafe is an awesome place to try out a South African barbecue called a Braai or walk the streets of Maboneng which is set centrally, a cosmopolitain part of the city with lots of restaurants, markets, cafes, art rooms which attracts many tourists. You could also take a drive to the lesedi cultural village where you can learn about all the South African tribes. Opposite the Lesedi cultural village also lies the lion safari park so its really easy to get a lot done in a day. South Africa also has a few trust worthy wildlife experience places that offer elephant walks such as Knysna as well as in Haartebees port, where the animals are protected and not treated badly. The actual Elephant sanctuary in Haartebeesport isn’t a sanctuary as the Elephants are used for tourist rides, please don’t go there rather put in a little research there are a few lodges in the area which have free roaming wildlife and you can get pretty close to them if you are lucky.

Overall Johannesburg is great city, always practice general safety precautions, in areas such as Maboneng , because it attracts so many tourists its also a prime spot for pick pocketing and petty theft.

EVERYTHING ABOUT SOUTH AFRICA WAS PERFECT AND THE BESTTTTTT COUNTRY EVERRR. From the food to the people to the parties. I love everything about it. I believe SA is the most up to date modern country in Africa. Ubereats. Uber. The food was so cheap and so GOOD. The locals were so respectful. They were so many things to do in jo’burg. I stayed in airbnb for jo’burg and Cape town. Both place were just as beautiful as can be. I was just in awe of everything.

    Weekend markets in Jozi:
Johannesburg is known for its lively and diversity, so if you are a fan of markets its the place to be on weekends:
    1. Fourways farmers market: This happens in Fourways, Johannesburg and its the best in my experience on Fridays which is a night market (3;30 to 10:3o pm) and Sundays there’s more of a young crowd from 9am to 4pm. On Sundays the crown normally moves to a place called meat Lounge in Sunninghill which is a lively restaurant.
    2. Waterfall Market: This happens every Sunday
    3. Market on main Maboneng: This is open every Sunday and has a good variety of foods and items to buy. It ends in the afternoon but make your way to the Living Room afterwards for some sundowners. tip: This is in central johannesburg so although maboneng itself is pretty chilled, the area surrounding it is not the safest so take an Uber back and maybe not drive if you plan to stay late or even better get a hostel or something in that area.
    4. Neighbourgoods Market: This is open every saturday and is close to maboneng as stated in Number 3. It also ends early afternoon but theres a range of Bars such as Kitcheners and the Great Dane to do afterwards.

Before our safari in Krugger Park we arrived in Johannesburg for three days.
There are so many things to do : I recommend to book a walking tour, that is the best way to discover the city. You can book with Jozi free walking tour on fb, just send an email and they will reply. Street art is a must to see. The Art market of Rosebank rooftop is a paradise for people who are looking for all type of art craft (we spent all morning back and forth wanted to buy everything lol). Then you can take a uber to go visit the museum of African design, there is a food market very close with all kind of dishes. We also visited constitutional hill, Soweto and Mandela house. Do not leave joburg without visiting the apartheid museum (at list 3h). I must admit that the history is very painful and also very educational. Overall it was more educational then leasure time for us. We didn’t really experience the night life for timing and security reasons. But i will go back for sure.

So, I went to South Africa alone and to Joburg, which was highly Ill advised by most people. Joburg has a stigma surrounding it, since the Apartheid, but I felt safe and had zero issues the whole trip. If you go, you must check out the Hector Peterson Museum, it was very detailed and informative!! I had never even heard if Hector until I was there and it’s another peice if history to take along with me in life. Also not far from the museum is a street that is very famous, because not only was one Nobel Peace Prize winner raised there, but Two! Nelson Mandela and Desmond TuTu, were both born and raised on Vilakazi, which now still home to Nelson Mandela’s house, as well as, several restaurants, street performers, street vendirs and thick culture. I learned alot there just having afternoon brunch and listening to the natives talk. I want divulge it all here, because I want you to visit for yourself. I aslo got to attend the Arts culture music festival and it was dope as well. So many good artists! This happened in September, so check it out!

Johannesburg is definitely my favorite place ever because it is so rich in culture and there is just so much to do. I was there for 5 days and everyday was an adventure. I stayed at the Michel Angelo in Sandton. On the first day, I went to Lesedi where you get to dress up in Zulu cultures and they teach you about the culture as well. Everyone is so kind and helpful. The second day, I went to gold reef city which is an amusement park. The best ride there is the tower of terror. After that we went to Maboneng which is a very chill place with great restaurants. On day 3 we went to Soweto where we went bungee jumping at the Soweto towers and then ended our day chilling in Vilakazi street which has great music. On day 4 we went to rosebank where there was a great art museum and beautiful restaurants, you can literally spend the whole day there looking at the different art museums. We later when to club taboo which is so much fun! On day 5, we went to the Lion and Safari park where We got to play with lion cubs and walk with a cheetah. That was the highlight of my trip! Johannesburg is a must!

Johannesburg is a must when visiting South Africa. It was great for a safari, the Apartheid museum and food. I do not feel you need more than 2 full days here. It is full of history and site seeing but not much nightlife. The Lion & Safari park was very inexpensive and a great way to see the wildlife it is voted the best big 5 day safari. You are able to pet the lions and feed the giraffes. We also did Nelson Mandela’s house in Soweto Township.

Joburg is a MUST! This city is amazing with so much to do. When I visited I stayed in Sandton which was posh and affordable. There’s a lot of things to do like sun city, Soweto towers, the apartheid musuem, the Mandela house, gold reef city and the lion park.

The food in Johannesburg was amazing. I tried a restaurant called Blackanese in the Mobaneng area. The food was amazing. I am a sucker for anything grilled and they did not fall short on flavor, while remaining authentic to their culture. Often you see this when you eat at restaurants in foreign countries because they try to conform to the taste buds of caucasians. Because I am of Haitian decent, I noticed the food was very similar to my own cuisine. Spicy meats, well seasoned and tender. I ate the local street foods with some apprehension because my stomach can be delicate to certain bacteria but I was perfectly fine. Whether it was a restaurant, or street vendor, I found the food to be amazing.

I stayed at Curiocity Backpackers hostel in the Maboneng precinct. Maboneng, meaning the place of life is a revitalized urban area of Johannesburg tapped with art, music, and culture. When visiting, this is the area to eat, live, and genuinely have a great time. I immediately connected with the locals here. We went to the grocery and all put in money to have a local braai. It was great! I didn’t feel threatened or anything. Also went to Kruger and Lion Safari park which wasn’t too far from good ol’ Jozi which is my fav part of South Africa.

Can I just say the most humbling experience of my life. City is so rich in culture and history. The locals are beautiful and pleasant. I stayed in the Westin which a great hotel, near Mandela Square. It’s a must to go on tours around the city and where he lives as a child. A must go!

I traveled Joburg in December/January with a group of girl friends (me, my sister, our close friends who are also sisters). The friends I was traveling with lived in Joburg for many years, so they were well acquainted with the area. I think December/January is a fantastic time to visit because it is in the heat of their summer– however, keep in mind that a lot of business will be closed or have limited hours during the holiday seasons.

We attended Afropunk music festival while we were there and had an amazing time! There were a lot of African musicians/ singers that I was less familiar with, but still really enjoyed being in that environment and able to appreciate the music. There were also artists that I was familiar with and very excited to see, mainly Andserson .Paak, who headlined. I was blown away by his talent– signing, dancing, playing drums. He had an incredible performance, which was obvious by the energy of the crowd at 1am on New Years, despite having been on our feet at the festival for hours already, The fashion at the festival was also so fun, and experiencing Afropunk in Africa was unbeatable.

My girlfriend and I traveled to the golden city of Joburg last year and we absolutely loved it. We are both black (I am African she is Haitian) and we felt right at home. We traveled from the states with Delta ( direct flight from Atl) we stayed at an airbnb, which was pretty affordable. It included free breakfast and we had access to a pool. Just be patient and do your research you’ll fine something cheap and amazing on airbnb.
We had a limited time, so we pay for a tour bus, and the following days we went on a safari, with Bakgatla Company. There are amazing and I highly recommend them for a safari tour. They’ll pick you up and drop you back to your hotel or residence. The tour included a free lunch, and was very affordable.

Most of our time in Jo’burg was spent outside of Jo’burg’s city at the Lion and Safari Park which was amazing. The elephant sanctuary in Hartbeesport was great as well. We went to the elephant sanctuary in the morning and then went to the lion and Safari Park in the afternoon on the same day as they are only about 15 minutes away from each other. Uber in South Africa we found to be very affordable, so getting around using Uber was pretty straightforward and affordable.

Ok, so let me start off by proclaiming my proudly Capetonian roots. The natural beauty here is just second to none and having travelled quite a bit – it still remains one of the most beautiful cities I’ve ever seen. That said, Johannesburg is like Cape Town’s less attractive cousin with a great personality. Still, we’re from Africa so that makes us family. If you’re a first time visitor be sure to check out the Soweto Towers, the Apartheid museum as well as Vilakazi street – home of our late, great former President, Nelson Mandela. Otherwise there’s loads of other things to do in Jozi. You can literally pop in any weekend of the year and Jozi’s social scene will be popping i.e festivals, parties, concerts, VIP appearances etc. Also do check out the Maboneng Precinct for some great markets, amazing local foods, roof top bars and some pretty cool art exhibitions .

In 2010, I was blessed to travel to (Jozi )Johannesburg, South Africa as a gift from my Dad for excellent academic performance. I spent 2 month there, and the experience was amazing. Be open minded to other people’s cultures and it will make your travel to SA easier. I enjoyed going on adventure there. I did a one day tour few days after my arrival, and learned a lot. This tour company does things differently. They have a more personal and interactive approach to the way they do things. Really refreshing!!!The best guides I could ever ask. Will recommend anyone to climb with you.

Okay, I will be a little biased because I live near the city. There are plenty of things to do in and around the city. Most activities range between R150 and R300, which translates to US$13-US$25 .

    Things to do include:
    – Gold Reef City
    – NeighbourHood Goods Market, Fourways Market, Market on Main [Sundays]
    – The Lion Park
    – Maboneng Neighbourhood
    – The Soweto Tours
    – Vilakazi Street, Soweto
    – Cradle of Humankind (25km Outside Joburg)
    – Lesedi cultural village (35 Outside Joburg)
    – Orlando Towers (Chaf Pozi, A truly authentic South African experience)
    – SAB world of beer (Bookings need to be made prior)
    – Melville (27 boxes and the surrounding streets, for an urban hip food experience)
    – Walter Sisulu botanical gardens

Loved Johannesburg! I had the opportunity to do several of the tourist things, Soweto, Mongena Game Lodge, Lesedi Cultural Village, Lion & Safari Park, etc and they were all amazing experiences, each with its own special history and information, but my favorite by far was Rosebank Sunday Market.
If you have the time, make your way over there on a Sunday and speak with all the local artisans and be sure to take a way your special piece of South Africa. Paintings, clothing, hand crafts, jewelry, carvings, statues all available from the artists themselves. It starts early morning and goes until about 5pm, you get the thrill of negotiations and to chat with them about their lives at a vibrant location.

Have you ever been to a place one time and instantly you realize that it’s a destination that you know you must return to again….and again….and again?? Africa has been just that for me! And perhaps what made it even more memorable was the fact that I did it SOLO! So below are a few places that are a must see and things that are a must do! I will try to encompass all categories here in one.

    Places to See!
    – Nelson Mandela Square in Soweto
    – Lion & Safari Park in Hartsbeespoort
    – Maboneng (Definitely a Must!!)
    – Apartheid Museum

    Affordability?
This is probably one of the least expensive trips i have been on in a while. Transportation (Uber) and hotel accommodations is very affordable. I recommend the Four Seasons Hotel in Westcliff as its about 20 mins away from the city and the hospitality is a 10!

    Nightlife?

I was a little uncomfortable venturing out alone at night as I was flying SOLO and it was my first time. But definitely on my return, this is something that i do plant to take more advantage of.
Check out a few photos on my instagram below!

    Food?
One Location I loved is a Restaurant called Pata Pata! You won’t be disappointed!

Johannesburg is my most favorite place out of the 25 countries I have seen thus far. This is the real South Africa, where you see majority of your OWN people in comparison to Cape Town. I have zero complaints! There is a misconception where people think this place is poor, but it is very developed! Everywhere has WiFi, Uber’s are everywhere and only cost on the average $2! There is so much to see, learn, do etc. If you look adventure you can bungy jump off the Orlando Towers. If you love food you can get a steak dinner with desert (not cow, but springbok, kudu and ostrich) for about $10. If you like nightlife you can go to Taboo nightclub. If you enjoy wildlife you can go to lions & Safari Park. For history lovers, definitely visit SoWeTo township, where Nelson Mandela was raised and his house. You can also volunteer and donate at Kliptown Youth Program. Helping underprivileged children with education and food. There are tons of street stands where u can purchase various things. I enjoyed every second I was Johannesburg for 5 days I was there. I was I spent more time and I am planning to visit again this year. Pictures of my experience IG:Abventurous_

Joburg is such a moving place from his history to the urban living. Johannesburg climate is perfect I was visiting in December and it’ll the weather is beautiful. I stayed in the Maboneng district which was a hipster vibe. It was great people were super friendly and there was always something to do. You can’t come to Johannesburg and not visit Soweto. I highly recommend it.

If you’re looking for a safe, quiet area to stay in Sandton is perfect. It’s also very easy to take the Gautrain from the airport straight to Sandton in about 10min (to avoid traffic).
I’d recommend staying at The Sandton Sky Apartments. They’re luxury apartments with all the amenities of a hotel. You can book directly through them or via Airbnb.
The Codfather is one of the best restaurants in South Africa and it’s located on the first floor of the building and you must try it. I ate at the Codfather in Joburg and Capetown, eat at the one in Joburg if possible… They have a more extensive menu, a better atmosphere and they have cocktails. The one in cape Town doesn’t have cocktails or an extensive menu.

I visited Johannesburg while traveling with my husband and his band… So, I can’t honestly speak to the affordability because we didn’t have to pay for anything. BUT, I can speak to my experience there, which was incredible!

I honestly don’t know what I was expecting, but there’s a lot to do in Jo-Burg. More than I anticipated! We visited Soweto (which I would suggest for some local food), the Apartheid Museum (which is a must do), and the Mandela house all in one day. Very feasible to do and all worth visiting!

On our last day, we visit the Lion Park which is outside of the city, but well worth the drive. None of us were brave enough to play with the lions, but we have some incredible videos and photos and really appreciated the staff at the park who accommodated our group of 10 people with no issues.

We also hit the night scene while we were there, although I cannot recall the name of the club. We had a GREAT time. Reasonably priced drinks, great food, lots of dancing, and really fun people. We heard about some other clubs but didn’t have time to visit!

Overall, there’s probably more to do in Cape Town, but Johannesburg offers it’s own unique experience and is right up there in the number of great things to do while you visit.

It is a city that satisfies the cultural tourist and the millennial. For a taste of the native cruising, dinning at Mandela’s Square is where you will find some of the best restaurants.

After that – go to Soweto and visit Mandela’s House. Also a ton of history there. The local food everywhere was pretty good. We did not do any night life there so we can’t really comment on that. Overall, we liked JoBurg and we would go back.

While Johannesburg I stayed at the African Pride Melrose Arch. This hotel was absolutely gorgeous and centrally located. They offered breakfast every morning that was included in the reservation. They had a buffet but you could also order from the menu. The pool area was very calm and relaxing and it also offered a bar. The food and drink prices were very affordable. The Melrose Arch area is very popular and there are several restaurants and shopping areas near by. I was able to walk to a lot of the cute restaurants and most of them offered happy hour.

There are many things to do in Johannesburg! Some of my favourites are the neighbourgood markets on the weekend– so much food, live music, local crafts and loads of young people.

Another option is heading to Soweto for local food and culture and the Mandela house. The Apartheid Museum is a definite ‘yes’ as well!

Me and three friends went to South Africa for my birthday last august. It was amazing. We met a local Dj from london at our hotel bar and he showed us the nightlife. The best part of the trip was the safari at Lion park. We brought liquor and bought food at the reserve. They allowed us to bring our remi on the tour. A tip I can give is to tip your driver before hand. We tipped our driver and he took the gates off and allowed us to leave the jeep for better pictures.

Johannesburg is one of those cities that evoke the real essence of the African struggle from colonial masters. It is rich with recent as well as distant history.
However, there is more to this city than just history. It is a hip city where young people are not afraid to express themselves creatively. The local food is amazing and is very affordable for a westerner. There is just so many things to do. I cant wait to visit again.

I loved Jo burg for its history but it felt like it was a little too corporate for me. It’s like the business center for the country. There is also a good about of segregation and I often felt as if people were still living in the aparteid days. The food was great though.

I stayed almost 2 weeks in different parts of the city in Jozi and absolutely loved it!

My Traveling While Black experience was off the richter

Oh, and I haven’t even talked to you about my Soweto crew!! A buddy of mine connected me with some Soweto locals and they were PHE-NOM-ENAL. They treated me like family and showed me nothing but love. Check them out if you end up in SowetoYou can have a drink and they will take you around town for a truly authentic experience.

I stayed in three different areas while I was in Jozi and would highly recommend Maboneng. It definitely has a hipster vibe and whether or not that is what you are in to, I think you can’t go wrong with this part of the city. Also, I definitely liked Braamfontein, but tread softly. I can see some people feeling that it is sketchy and a bit unsafe, but I loved it. I actually spent a couple days there, went to a different part of the city, and then came back. In regards to Sandton it was whack, I wouldn’t stay there again. One other option that I did not consider before was actually staying in Soweto. I went there 3 days straight so I actually would have been better off if I just found some accommodations in the area. But, it was fun learning how to take the taxis up there lol..
